REGISTERED NURSE
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Provides professional medical care for detained youth. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Deputy Superintendent. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate support personnel serving in a medical capacity.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Assists detention home Doctor on performing physical examinations on detained children; checks and records vital signs;
Obtains medical history, including possible allergies, chronic health problems, drug abuse and other pertinent information;
Obtains laboratory specimens;
Consults with doctors, other nurses, probation officers, social workers, parents, etc., regarding children’s physical and emotional problems and provides copies of the physical examination to authorized persons on request;
Makes appointments and accompanies children to various health clinic and hospital emergency room;
Maintains health records on all children examined;
Gives medication and performs treatment recommended by the detention home doctor, family physician, or other doctors treating the child;
Performs first-aid measures for simple injuries and illnesses;
Conducts classes for children on general health and hygiene, including drug abuse and sexually transmitted infections;
Teaches Medication Aide class and refresher courses to Child Care Staff;
Teaches classes on Blood Borne Pathogens, Health Screenings at Admission, and other required courses;
Provides instruction to Child Care Staff in special medical needs of residents;
Requisitions and dispenses medical supplies and drugs;
On call for emergencies during off duty hours;
Performs other related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of general nursing practices and methods; thorough knowledge of the medical needs of maladjusted children; ability to provide training and instruction to adult learners and adolescents; ability to work effectively with co-workers and other professionals; ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Commission members, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public; ability to make critical decisions regarding medical needs of detainees.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two (2) years of successful experience in graduate nursing and hospital work. Possession of a license as a registered professional nurse as issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Possess the physical ability to effectively use and operate office equipment, such as, computers, calculators, copiers, and fax machine.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License.
